What is a GLB file?

GLB, the binary form of glTF

GLB is the format 3D ships in. When a model needs to load in a web page, an AR viewer or a game engine, it almost always goes as a .glb — one self-contained file that carries everything. It's the binary side of glTF, and it has become the de-facto standard for delivering 3D anywhere it will be seen live.

What's inside a GLB

A GLB packs the whole model into a single binary file: the mesh, the PBR materials, every texture, and any animation. That self-containedness is the point — hand someone a GLB and there are no missing-texture surprises, which is exactly what you want when a browser or engine has to fetch and render it in one request.

It's also why a GLB can balloon. The textures are usually the heavy part: a couple of 4K images baked in will turn a small mesh into a 40 MB download. For the web that matters, and the fix is compression — Draco or Meshopt for the geometry, KTX2/Basis for the textures — which routinely takes a 40 MB GLB down to a few megabytes with no visible loss.

GLB vs glTF, and where AR fits

GLB and glTF are the same format in two packagings. glTF is human-readable JSON plus separate .bin and texture files — handy for inspecting or editing by hand. GLB packs all of that into one binary. You edit and debug as glTF; you ship as GLB.

For augmented reality, GLB covers Android (Scene Viewer) and the web, but Apple's AR Quick Look on iOS wants USDZ instead. The common approach is to supply both a GLB and a USDZ and let the <model-viewer> tag serve whichever the device needs.

GLB files — FAQ

How do I open a GLB file?
In the browser: a GLB viewer opens it instantly and shows the model with its materials. GLB is also read natively by Blender, three.js, Babylon.js, and game engines like Unity and Unreal.
Why is my GLB file so big?
Almost always the baked-in textures. A couple of 4K images make a small mesh into a tens-of-megabytes download. Compress it with gltf-transform or gltfpack (Draco/Meshopt geometry + KTX2 textures) and it typically drops to a few MB.
GLB or glTF — which should I use?
Same format, two packagings. GLB is a single binary file — ship this to the web, AR and engines. Plain .gltf is JSON plus separate .bin and texture files, useful when you want to read or edit the JSON by hand. For delivery, always GLB.
Can I 3D print a GLB?
Not directly — slicers want STL (or 3MF). A GLB carries materials and animation a printer ignores. Convert the GLB to STL, check it's watertight, then slice it.
Does a GLB support animation?
Yes. GLB (glTF) carries skeletal animation, so rigged characters keep their motion. That's a big reason it's preferred over OBJ and STL for game and AR assets, which are static.

Need a 3D model, not just the file format?

Describe it or drop in a photo — Sculptor generates a 3D model and exports it as GLB, GLB, STL or OBJ in about a minute.
